Over the last few weeks, our country has struggled under ongoing threats from an exceptionally active and dangerous hurricane season and fire season.
Hurricane Sally struck the Alabama-Florida Gulf Coast before moving inland. But the destruction from the relentless rains and flooding devastated the impacted areas, causing widespread damage and leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power. In addition, fires raging up and down the West Coast have forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes and seek safety from the flames. With many of the fires not fully contained, western states continue to battle catastrophic wildfires that have burned millions of acres of land and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. It will be days and weeks before people can fully assess the devastation to their homes and communities.
Recognizing the challenges so many will face as a result of these disasters — especially vulnerable older adults who have been affected — AARP Foundation has created a relief fund to support the victims of Hurricane Sally and Western Wildfires. To meet their needs, AARP Foundation will match — dollar for dollar — contributions up to a total of $500,000.
AARP Foundation, our charitable affiliate, will direct 100 percent of all funds raised to organizations that are providing relief and assistance to disaster victims in the stricken areas. If you are in a position to help, contribute now to double your gift and your positive impact. Every dollar will make a difference.
