Florence, compared to cities like Rome, Paris, and Barcelona, has a smaller historical center. That alone makes planning much easier since you shouldn't be too nervous about staying on the "wrong side of town." As a rule of thumb, if you are within a 15-minute walking distance of Ponte Vecchio, you are in a good position.
