The 'Bear Market Window' Opens Soon We're in a midterm-election year. And that could spell trouble for your portfolio... Since 1950, the U.S. stock market has returned half the average amount in midterm years as in "regular" years. Specifically, the S&P 500 Index has gained about 10% in regular years over the decades versus just 4.6% in midterm years. And some midterm years do even worse... Just think about what happened in the last one. In 2022, the S&P 500 finished the year down 19%. But that was just the average drop in the index. Individual investors often saw even bigger losses. As the Financial Times reported, retail investors' portfolios were down an average of 44% year to date by October (versus 22% for the index). Not only did that mean investors had double the losses of the S&P 500, but their wealth was also nearly cut in half. Of course, not every midterm year is that extreme. In 2018, for example, the index only shed 4%. However, the average investor still lost 9% that year – more than double. This is a recurring theme. And to make matters worse, we're about to enter the weakest stretch of the midterm year... The window from April through September in midterm years has averaged negative returns across all major indexes since the 1940s. It's the worst-performing six-month period in market history. Going back to our 2022 example, the S&P fell more than 20% between April and September of that year. Marc Chaikin – my friend and the founder of our corporate affiliate Chaikin Analytics – calls this six-month period the "Bear Market Window," since it has frequently resulted in 20%-plus drawdowns. And he believes the next one could be devastating for average investors like you. With technology stocks already showing signs of instability and money rotating into different parts of the market, Marc says many folks may be exposed to significant downside if they continue to rely on traditional buy-and-hold strategies. He notes... Whether you succeed or fail in the coming months will come down to whether you're able to ride this new wave of winners and losers... or get completely crushed by it. To help folks navigate this confusing and risky market, Marc and his team have developed a new 90-day investing strategy. Instead of holding stocks for years and riding through every market swing, this approach works by identifying the strongest sectors and the strongest stocks within those sectors. That way, even if the broad market falls sharply, you could still enjoy huge wins – potentially doubling your portfolio in the process. Marc recently hosted a free webinar where he covered all the details of this strategy and how he can help you make money in turbulent times. He also gave away two recommendations to viewers just for tuning in. If you're interested in protecting your wealth in the face of a brewing bear market, you can watch a replay of the event here. One of my researchers hates blueberries (but I keep her on the team anyway). Overall, blueberries are a powerhouse that other berries just can't beat. But if you need an alternative, some other berries have lots of great and often similar benefits... - Cranberries contain compounds that help prevent bacteria like food-borne pathogens (for example, E. coli and staphylococcus) from sticking to cells. They can also keep plaque from sticking to the surface of your teeth. And they are rich in polyphenol antioxidants, which have been shown to help inhibit cancer growth, particularly breast cancer.
- Blackberries help lower cholesterol and fight cancer. And they improve your immune system because they're packed with vitamin C. Their high amounts of potassium and salicylate (an ingredient in aspirin) may help protect you against high blood pressure.
- Raspberries (probably my second favorite after blueberries) are packed with flavonoids like ellagic acid. Research shows ellagic acid inhibits tumor growth in certain cancers. And it kills cancer cells without harming healthy cells.
- Strawberries are also full of ellagic acid. Like all berries, they have lots of cancer-fighting antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. They can relieve many of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, especially pain.
These berries are all great for your health. But don't give up on blueberries... If you're not a fan of their flavor or texture, try blending them in a smoothie with other berries or crushing them before adding them to yogurt or oatmeal. That way you'll still get all the benefits that only blueberries can offer. Keep sending your questions, comments, and suggestions our way.
