Oil Craters 11%, Nikkei Hits 62,000 — Markets Roar on Iran Peace Hopes |
Oil prices nosedived Wednesday after reports emerged that Washington and Tehran were close to a "one-page memorandum of understanding" to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude plunged from a recent $126/barrel high — a 4-year peak — to as low as $97, with WTI briefly hitting $88. U.S. stocks surged, with the S&P 500 and NASDAQ both closing at all-time highs. In Asia Thursday, Japan's Nikkei crossed 62,000 for the first time after returning from a holiday, up 4.2%. South Korea's Kospi and Taiwan's TAIEX also hit records. Trump said the strait would be "open to all" if Iran accepts a deal — but added "the bombing starts" if they don't. |

Iran War Linked to Trump Dinner Assassination Attempt, Intel Report Finds |
U.S. intelligence has identified the ongoing war with Iran as a potential motive for Cole Tomas Allen, 31, who allegedly stormed the White House Correspondents' Association dinner last month in a bid to kill President Trump. A Department of Homeland Security assessment dated April 27 cited Allen's "multiple social and political grievances." New court filings included video of Allen sprinting through security checkpoints at the Washington Hilton armed with a shotgun, pistol, and three knives — exchanging gunfire with Secret Service agents before being taken down. A federal judge separately apologized to Allen this week over his treatment in solitary confinement while awaiting trial. |

DeepSeek Eyes $45 Billion Valuation in Its First-Ever Funding Round |
China's AI lab DeepSeek is raising its first-ever venture capital round at a $45 billion valuation — up from $20 billion just weeks ago. China's state chip fund, the "Big Fund," is leading the round, with Tencent and Alibaba also in talks. Founder Liang Wenfeng, who controls nearly 90% of the company, originally wanted a small raise just to set a valuation for employee stock options — his real goal: stop rivals from poaching DeepSeek's researchers. DeepSeek became a global sensation in 2025 with AI models that match top Western systems at a fraction of the cost, optimized to run on Chinese-made Huawei chips. The round is China's deepest state-backed bet yet on homegrown AI to rival the U.S. |
