Five Days Until SpaceX. Here's What Retail Investors Need to Know. |
SpaceX begins trading on Thursday, June 12. The IPO price is $135 a share. The valuation is $1.77 trillion. This is the largest IPO in American history by a factor of four. And for the first time in a mega-IPO, retail investors have real access: Fidelity is offering shares to any customer with a $2,000 brokerage balance, and SpaceX has reserved up to 30% of the offering for individual investors. That is unusual. Normally, retail gets the scraps after institutions have taken their fill. |
The timing matters. SpaceX is listing into a market that just had its worst week of the year. The Nasdaq fell 4.18% on Friday. The S&P dropped 2.64%. Rate-hike odds are climbing. AI stocks lost over $1 trillion in market cap in two days. SpaceX is not an AI stock, but it is a high-multiple growth name entering a market that just punished high-multiple growth names. Your Monday Plan: Three Rules for a Correction Week |
This is the practical section. You spent Saturday reading about what broke. Today is about what to do about it. Three rules for Monday morning. |
Rule one: do not sell into the opening bell. Monday mornings after a Friday selloff are the worst time to make decisions. The first hour is dominated by weekend panic and margin calls. If you are going to trim, wait until after 10:30 a.m. ET, when the forced selling exhausts itself. If the market bounces after 10:30, the correction is shallow. If it keeps falling past 11:00, size your next move accordingly. |
Rule two: watch the 10-year yield, not the S&P. The yield at 4.54% is the driver. Below 4.60% next week means this is a normal correction after a nine-week streak — painful but healthy. Above 4.60% means the math on growth-stock valuations changes and the selloff has further to run. The yield tells you which story the market is in. The S&P just reflects it. |
Rule three: if you are holding cash — and you should be holding 15-20% — do not deploy it Monday. The SpaceX IPO on Thursday will be the single largest liquidity event of the year. The market will need to absorb a $75 billion offering while digesting a correction. That collision creates opportunity, but only for the patient. The converted amount grows tax-free forever. Not every plan allows this — check with your plan administrator. But for those that do, it is the single largest annual Roth conversion path available. The math: if you max the standard $24,500 pre-tax and then contribute another $45,500 after-tax and convert it, you are putting $70,000 per year into tax-advantaged accounts. A working couple can double that.
Why it matters: In a correction week, your instinct is to think about selling. The mega backdoor Roth is about the opposite — maximizing how much you can put in while prices are lower. Buying into a Roth at correction prices means every dollar of recovery grows tax-free.
