The pitch sounds simple. Open an account for a child, and if they qualify, the Treasury deposits $1,000 to get them started. |

Here's how it works. |
A Trump Account is a custodial investment account for any U.S. citizen under 18 with a Social Security number. The money goes into low-cost U.S. stock index funds and grows tax-deferred. At 18, the child takes control, and it converts to a traditional IRA. |
The $1,000 seed investment is reserved for babies born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. Older kids can still have an account opened for them — they just don't get the government deposit. |
Parents, guardians, grandparents and others can collectively contribute up to $5,000 a year in after-tax dollars, up until the year before the child turns 18. Employers can add up to $2,500 per worker per year, which counts toward that $5,000 limit. |
To open an account, you file IRS Form 4547, through trumpaccounts.gov or the app. The accounts are housed at Robinhood for now, with transfers to firms like Fidelity coming later. |
More than 6 million accounts are already open. 1.4 million of those will get the $1,000 federal contribution. |

SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) President Gwynne Shotwell just announced she and her husband are donating SpaceX stock to Trump Accounts for more than two million American children — a gift Barron's valued at over $324 million. |
The Dell family pledged $6.25 billion. And more than 50 companies and philanthropists have pledged money — including Micron (Nasdaq: MU), Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), BlackRock (NYSE: BLK), and Robinhood (Nasdaq: HOOD). |
Treasury projects a single $1,000 seed could reach about $15,000 by age 27 and $243,000 by age 55, based on historical S&P 500 averages. Fund it fully at $5,000 a year and the projections run into the millions. |
A few things to weigh. The money is locked until 18, and withdrawals then follow IRA rules, so earnings get taxed as ordinary income. If college is the whole goal, a 529 still wins on tax-free education withdrawals. But for building long-term wealth — and giving a kid an actual ownership stake in this country — I haven't seen a better tool. |
