Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ: LUNR) share price suffered an ailment common to space stocks in 2026: SpaceX hype. While the space market is fundamentally improving, the SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) IPO and period leading up to it induced some inflated valuations among space stocks.
The story as of August, however, is that valuations have come back to earth, are more grounded in reality, and reality is very bullish. While losses persist, a structural shift in demand underpins results and points to sustainable strength in the upcoming quarters.
Intuitive Machines boasts a swelling backlog, topping $1.8 billion as of Q2, sufficient for two years of operations based on 2026 projections, a clear runway intersecting with the profitability curve. Estimates vary but tend to agree—Intuitive Machines will transition to profitability over the next four quarters, achieve its first full year of growth in fiscal 2027, and grow its earnings exponentially the year after, potentially sustaining a triple-digit CAGR over following years.
Why? Intuitive Machines provides end-to-end infrastructure for space missions, central to NASA’s Artemis project and the commercialization of space more broadly. Its utility is focused on three areas: lunar landers and cargo delivery, near-space and lunar communications, and scalability. The company turns mission-specific criteria into repeatable, scalable processes and proven platforms. This is not a one-hit wonder but a mission-critical cog in the space ecosystem, poised to scale into a diversified infrastructure play with a multi-billion-dollar backlog.
Intuitive Machines Near-Term Pain Hides Long-Term Gains
Intuitive Machines had a tough Q2 relative to expectations. The $206.17 million in net revenue fell short of consensus estimates by several hundred basis points (bps), but the bar was set high. While the company missed forecasts, it grew revenue by more than 300%, underpinned by a diversifying group of clients and expanding service use, and remains on track to hit year-end goals.
Reasons for selling include the margin. The company’s GAAP losses widened across all levels, outpacing revenue growth, and are a cause for concern. The 29 cents in GAAP earnings per share (EPS) missed by nearly 20 cents, but long-term forecasts still matter. Upfront spending, including on inventory and capacity, is leading to accelerated contract volume, as reflected in the backlog. In this scenario, execution is critical, and the company appears to be doing well. Backlog conversion will overtake investments with time, leading to the expected profitability flip.
Guidance acts as a catalyst, but here it simply feeds into a stock outlook that's being reaffirmed at prior levels. The bad news is that no improvement was logged; the good news is that $950 million in annual revenue aligns with expectations and may be cautious. Investment dollars are flowing into the space industry, including for defense, exploration, and industrialization. Falling launch costs, thanks to SpaceX, are a major reason why.
Intuitive Machines Analysts Respond With Cautious Optimism
Analysts are responding favorably, overlooking near-term weakness in favor of robust underlying growth, backlog increases, and a diversifying business. No analyst revisions were made immediately after the release, leaving the trend intact, with 11 analysts rating it a consensus Buy and more than 90% upside relative to the pre-release close. The worst-case scenario is that price targets are reduced in the coming days, creating a near-term headwind, but institutional activity suggests the downside is limited.
Institutions own more than 70% of the stock and have been aggressively accumulating over the trailing 12-month period. More importantly, selling activity dried up to nearly nothing in Q2 and early Q3, leaving the market relatively unimpeded, discounting short-selling activity. Investors can expect institutions to continue buying on dips and limit downside moving forward.
Short-selling is risky, as short interest was running over 35% as of early August and may cap gains in the near term. Longer-term, however, the short interest is a bullish catalyst, likely to drive prices higher as short-covering accelerates and profitability improves. The only question is the timing of the shift.
Other risks for LUNR include cash burn. The company is on track for profits, but has yet to reach them and has been relying on capital infusions and share sales to bolster the balance sheet. The company is well-capitalized today, but future dilution cannot be ruled out. Additionally, reliance on government contracts raises the risk of lumpiness in results, along with the potential for delays or cost overruns to impair results. Catalysts include the recent acquisition of Goonhilly Earth Station, which deepens its capacity for lunar mission tracking and communications, entrenching it as a vertically integrated operator.
