That is how long inflation has run above target, by the account of a sitting Fed governor. Michael Barr said so Tuesday. A supply shock is meant to be the thing that passes.
THE SETUP
Barr is a Fed governor and votes every meeting. He would hike, he said, if inflation does not ease. Treasury Secretary Bessent reads the inflation as a passing oil shock.
Hike odds sit at 66% into the September 11 CPI. Three officials voted for one in July.
The Iran war is the backdrop. It began in late February. Brent is above $92.
OpenAI limited Astra, an unreleased model.
Dell (DELL) surged 9% on AI hardware. AI token prices set a record low.
China alone dissented at the G20 on trade.

This morning the Fed splits over the narrower version of that question. Barr set a condition with two branches. Wait if inflation eases, raise decisively if it does not. - Guggenheim moved to reassure clients its commercial-paper unit is safe as the Mark Walter probe widens.
- Foreign investors flip $40 billion between near-identical S&P 500 ETFs every quarter to dodge the 30% dividend tax.
- GoPro (GPRO) jumped 40% by pivoting into AI data centers. Allbirds (BIRD) did the same, rebranding as Smartbird.

The Fed Is Split on Hiking. The War That Won't End Is the Tiebreaker.
Barr set a condition Tuesday. It runs both ways. If inflation is easing the Fed can wait. If not, he said, it "should act decisively to raise rates." He listed the shocks that stalled progress in 2025. Tariffs, the Middle East, the AI buildout.
What Barr Did Not Say
The Middle East came up once, in the past tense. He did not mention oil. He never said the war is why he might move. The line from an unfinished war to a September hike is PMD's, not his.
Why This Shock Is Different
Central banks look past energy shocks because they fade. Bessent made that case from the G20.
The trouble is arithmetic. Six months is not weeks. Nobody ever wrote down how long a thing can last and still count as temporary.
The Rate Under the Argument
The bond market spent the G20 grading governments, and the grade was poor. If today's rate is the level rather than the brake, then September is a skirmish in a longer repricing.
The Clock on Temporary
The market prices two-thirds odds on a meeting five days after the print. Nothing marks the day temporary expires. A doctrine is failing in public and the meeting is only its output. A fourth official joining the July three before the 16th ends the split.

SIGNAL 1: OpenAI Capped Its Own Model Before Shipping It
Astra is the first model OpenAI has rated Critical for cyber risk. The bar is exploiting flaws in hardened systems unaided. Advanced cyber workflows go to a small group of testers first.
Astra had no part in July's Hugging Face break-in, the lab says. An internal research model drove it.
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) beat Tuesday. CrowdStrike (CRWD) and Okta (OKTA) ran the week before.
The Capability Nobody Can Sell
Palo Alto, CrowdStrike and Okta ran before Astra was rated. What has not moved is the seller's own ceiling. Capability grew this week and the sellable range narrowed. Should Astra reach general release with its cyber workflows gated, the cap is a permanent tier.
SIGNAL 2: Dell Is Booming While the Output Gets Cheaper
Dell's AI servers brought in $16.4 billion last quarter, double a year ago. Quarterly revenue hit a record $47.0 billion. Full-year guidance rises to $192.0 billion, AI servers tripling.
A day earlier, what those servers produce hit a record low price. Silicon Data's index put a million tokens at 97 cents, less than half the summer peak.
Revenue compounds. The output price collapses.
The Bill Not in the Quote
Dell's quarter is already in the price. What comes out of them is not. Revenue doubled on volume, while the output price halved. If the index prints under 80 cents before November, the two sides stop reconciling.
SIGNAL 3: Nineteen Against One, Weeks Before Xi Lands
Nineteen G20 members backed a US statement on trade imbalances. China alone dissented, objecting to four sections including trade and Hormuz shipping. Bessent called the "never-ending stream of cheap exports" unsustainable.
China's July exports rose 23.9% on a year earlier. Its EU goods surplus hit 359.8 billion euros last year. Xi visits the US late this month.
China is also Iran's largest oil buyer.
The Two Asks
The tariff arithmetic is easy. The collision behind it is not. The country squeezed on exports is the one Washington needs on Hormuz. Nineteen signatures buy pressure only while nobody needs the holdout. Should the nineteen name a date for tariffs before Xi lands, the pressure has a price.

- Watch Thursday's Cybercab launch. A slip re-dates robotaxi models.
- Read Friday's jobs report as the labour half of the case. A soft print revives the wait.
- Check what you sell into Canada before September 8.
- Count the dissents on September 16. The number is the guidance.
Capital Discipline
Every exit model carries a rate assumption. It may sit in an exit yield, a refinancing spread, or a multiple. Most date from a rate that looked restrictive. The model assumes cuts arrive before the exit does.
Before September's IC, find that line in each position exiting inside eighteen months. Rebuild it on a 3.6% base held flat to the exit, your own spread on top. Write the new IRR beside the old one. Lose under two points and the plan stands. Lose more and the equity cheque is what to resize, not the date.
PMD REPOSITION
The Fed split named the decision. OpenAI named the risk inside the boom. Dell and token prices named its economics splitting. China named the trade front opening. One question now carries a date.
Can the Fed call this temporary into a seventh month of war? Bessent's case rests on the shock fading. It hasn't. Barr's rests on acting before higher prices get built in. September 11's CPI settles which the data supports. The FOMC five days later shows which the Fed believes.
