The Two-Million-Ounce Headline Leaves Something Out |
|
|
The drilling at the old Contact Lake mine is not included in the published estimate. That makes the next questions more interesting, not the outcome certain. |
Dear Reader, |
A big gold-resource number can stop a reader in their tracks. |
Two million ounces sounds substantial. But it is not enough to understand a company. |
Before treating that number as meaningful, there are questions to ask. |
Where are the ounces? How confidently have they been estimated? And what part of the company's exploration story is outside the calculation? |
In this case, that last question leads straight to an old gold mine. |
Trident Resources (TSXV: ROCK | OTCQB: TRDTF) reports approximately 0.9 million ounces of Indicated gold resources and 1.1 million ounces of Inferred gold resources across four deposits in Saskatchewan's La Ronge Gold Belt. |
Those deposits are North Lake, Preview SW, Preview North and Greywacke. The estimate has an effective date of November 6, 2025. |
Three of those deposits sit within Trident's 100%-owned Contact Lake Gold Project. The drilling in this story is on that same property, at and below the historic Contact Lake mine itself. |
The historic Contact Lake mine zone is not included in that published resource estimate. |
Neither the zone's historical drilling nor the recent drill results there are part of those reported ounces. |
This also means there is a separate exploration question that the headline number does not answer. |

A resource estimate and a drill result do different jobs |
An Indicated resource has a higher level of geological confidence than an Inferred resource. Neither category is a mineral reserve, and neither establishes economic viability. |
A drill result is narrower evidence: what a particular hole encountered along a particular interval. |
Encouraging drilling is not the same thing as booked resource growth. |
Geologists must evaluate continuity, geometry, sampling and other evidence before new results can support an updated estimate. Economics require further work still. |
At Contact Lake, the exploration evidence is specific enough to examine. |
On April 29, 2026, the company reported 15.11 grams per tonne gold over 51.83 metres in hole CL26036, including 20.69 grams per tonne over 28.69 metres. |
Those are drilled lengths, with true widths not determined at the time of reporting. |
The company later reported that all 29 Contact Lake winter-program holes intersected gold mineralization. |
These results help explain management's focus. They do not establish how many additional ounces, if any, a future resource estimate might contain. |
A defined foundation. A separate exploration opportunity. Different levels of certainty. |
The people and the place are part of the assessment |
There is another useful ownership lesson here: an asset is not just the material in the ground. |
It also depends on who advances it, how work is funded, and whether the location supports practical execution. |
The company formed through the consolidation of Eros Resources, MAS Gold and Rockridge Resources. That merger closed in January 2025, bringing previously separate assets under one corporate structure. |
Its technical and capital-markets team includes CEO Jonathan Wiesblatt, President Jordan Trimble, Chairman Tim Termuende, and VP Exploration Cornell McDowell. |
Strategic Advisor Ron Netolitzky brings a career that included involvement in the Eskay Creek and Snip discoveries. His experience gives readers a reason to examine the geological thesis, not assume another similar discovery. |

Saskatchewan ranked third of 68 jurisdictions in the Fraser Institute's 2025 Investment Attractiveness Index. |
The company also describes road access, hydroelectric power, nearby communities and established mining services in the La Ronge Gold Belt. |
Even promising rocks need a workable path through the real world. |
What would make the story more convincing? |
That is the question worth carrying into the next release. |
Further drilling would need to help establish the extent and continuity of mineralization, rather than simply produce another isolated headline. |
At the company's September 17 update, its anticipated 20,000-metre summer/fall program had completed 17 holes totaling 12,066 metres. Additional assays were expected through Q4 2026 and Q1 2027, although schedules can change. |
Results may support the geological model. They may also disappoint or require the company to revise its interpretation. |
Contact Lake's history adds context: Cameco produced approximately 190,000 ounces there between 1994 and 1998. There is no current gold production at Contact Lake but the company is confident in the potential at the project. |
Another compelling part to the investment thesis is the rerate potential as Trident is trading at a lower valuation per ounce of gold in the ground relative to its peers. This provides an opportunity in an undervalued story that is relatively new in the market. |

The most interesting detail may be what the headline does not contain. |

P.S. Two million ounces describes what has already been estimated. The drilling below the old mine is testing what hasn't been. Trident's homepage puts both side by side: |
