Gold Was Bought for This War. It Trades Like a Bet on Peace.
Oil fell 7.6% on Monday as Iran cleared the way for peace talks, and gold rose about 2% off a one-year low. Overnight, a reported U.S. strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, sent oil back above $105 and gold lower. Eight months in, the metal Americans buy as war insurance has paid off on ceasefire days.

• Monday, Nov. 2: Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, closed at $104.77, down 7.63%, and U.S. crude had its biggest one-day loss since July 27. Gold rose about 2%, to near $3,950 an ounce.
• Friday, Oct. 30: Gold fell 3.6% to near $3,875, its lowest since October 2025, as investors sold it to cover losses in AI stocks.
• Overnight: U.S. officials called the strike on Qeshm Island defensive. Brent rose back above $105, and gold slipped 0.5% to $3,926.52 in early Asian trading.
• Since the war began: Brent’s Monday close is nearly 45% above its last pre-war close of $72.48. Gold is down 27% from $5,378 on March 2.

The War Hedge Lasted One Trading Day
On March 2, the first trading day after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, gold did its job. It rose more than 2%, toward $5,400 an ounce. A brief performance. The next day it fell hard as oil jumped and Brent closed at $81.49, its highest since January 2025.
In March, gold lost more than 11%, its steepest monthly drop in more than a decade. Brent went from $72.48 to above $112. From the first week, gold and oil moved in opposite directions.
Run the turning points since.
1. April 8, ceasefire. A two-week truce took hold, and gold climbed above $4,800.
2. June 15, peace deal. Washington and Tehran announced a deal that later unraveled. Gold gained more than 1% that day.
3. Sept. 28, offer rejected. Trump turned down Iran’s offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Brent rose about 4%, and gold fell 3.2%.
4. Nov. 2, talks cleared. Brent fell 7.6%, and gold rose about 2%.
Sunday’s edition said the oil market was waiting for the day after the election. Oil moved on Monday instead, and gold moved the opposite way within hours.
The link is the Fed. In February, traders still expected the Fed to cut rates at least twice in 2026. Instead, it raised rates on Sept. 16 to 3.75%–4.00%, its first increase in three years. Futures traders now put the odds of another hike in December at 74%, per CME FedWatch, down from 80% a week ago.
A six-month Treasury bill yielded about 4.3% last week, per the St. Louis Fed. Gold pays nothing. When the war pushes oil up, inflation fears rise, and so do the odds of a rate hike. Each hike raises the cost of holding a metal with no income. Gold is not this war’s hedge. It is a bet on the ceasefire.
Rates are only half of what reaches a portfolio from Washington. The other half is the rulebook, and tonight’s count decides who writes it. On the ballot: 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships. Federal debt stood at $40.55 trillion on Oct. 28, per Treasury, and the next Congress inherits it. The tax and spending rules that follow reach a retirement account long before they reach the gold price.

The buyers who never sold. The World Gold Council’s third-quarter report shows a second, slower market. Central banks bought a net 321 tonnes, their fastest quarterly pace since late 2024. China added 63 tonnes and Poland 41. Funds backed by physical gold added 211 tonnes, lifting their holdings to a record.
On Sept. 29 we split gold into two markets: traders who set the daily price, and long-term holders who own the metal. Five weeks and about $220 an ounce later, the long-term holders are still buying. Same metal. Different buyer. Central banks buy on a ten-year view of the dollar, and one night’s strike near Iran barely changes that math.
That long view is mostly about Washington’s finances. Julius Baer’s Carsten Menke expects U.S. deficits and debt to remain a longer-term support for gold.
The other seller. Friday’s drop to a one-year low had little to do with Iran. AI stocks were falling, and gold was being sold “to cover losses and margin calls elsewhere,” per KCM Trade’s Tim Waterer. That’s forced selling: investors who borrowed against falling stocks had to raise cash fast, and gold is easy to sell. It was the same pattern we traced on Oct. 27. On Monday the pressure stayed in tech. The main index of chip stocks fell 3.3%. Oracle dropped 8.8% after saying it will sell $20 billion of new stock and bonds.
Today’s election adds a calendar to the picture. S&P 500 data back to 1950 show the index higher 12 months after all 19 midterms, counted from each October close. The bulls pair that record with AI spending that keeps rising through the selloff. Oracle’s $20 billion is meant to fund more of it. Musk’s SpaceX plans to spend $35 billion to $40 billion this quarter while it builds AI computing capacity, as we covered Oct. 21. A pattern that has held since 1950, meeting Musk’s AI spending: that is the optimists’ story for the next 12 months.

Where that leaves you. A reader who put $40,000 into gold on March 2, as war insurance, paid about $5,378 an ounce. At this morning’s $3,926, that position is worth about $29,200. Energy stocks, the other common inflation hedge, moved the opposite way on Monday. Exxon fell 4.1% and Occidental 5.1% while gold rose. Same headline. Opposite answers.
My read is that the pattern holds for as long as this war runs through the oil price into the Fed. That still makes gold useful, in a different job than most holders hired it for. Worth knowing which job yours is doing. One is a reserve held for a decade, beside the central banks. The other is a wager on the next Iran headline. Both are legitimate. Only one is insurance.
Gold was hired in March to pay off when the news got worse. Eight months later, it pays when the news gets better. Wednesday’s ISM survey of service-sector prices will show which kind of news the Fed is reading.
