The Chip Design Firm Powering Every Hyperscaler's Custom Silicon |
|
|
This company designs the custom AI silicon inside Amazon's Trainium, Google's TPU, and Microsoft's Maia. With earnings Thursday, this is the picks-and-shovels AI name almost nobody is talking about. |

30‑Second Take |
Why now? Every headline in AI right now belongs to NVIDIA. But the company designing the custom AI chips inside Amazon's Trainium, Google's TPU, and Microsoft's Maia is Marvell, and you're barely hearing about it. |
Its interconnect segment is guided to grow above 70% this fiscal year. Custom silicon revenue is compounding fast as the big four hyperscalers race to cut their dependence on NVIDIA. |
Marvell reports Q2 FY27 results on Thursday after the close, giving you a near-term catalyst to watch. The bigger story is the multi-year design win pipeline that hasn't been priced in yet. |

Trade Setup |
Time frame: 3 to 12 months Edge type: Structural growth catalyst |
Marvell is one of a handful of names that gets paid whether Amazon, Google, Microsoft, or Meta wins the AI race. |
Every custom accelerator these hyperscalers deploy pulls in Marvell's serdes, DSPs, and networking silicon. That's a picks-and-shovels position you probably don't already own. |

1-Month Trading Summary: MRVL is up about 12% over the past month, from roughly $211 to Friday's $237 close, but it gave back 5.6% on Friday alone. That leaves it around 28% below its $330 52-week high, so you are not chasing a record here. |
Volume tells you the same story. Friday's 25.5 million shares came in below the 41.1 million three-month average, which means the pullback was drift rather than heavy selling. Expect that to change as Thursday's print gets closer, starting with today's session. |
|
|
Bull Case |
Core thesis: AI infrastructure spend isn't slowing. What's changed over the last 18 months is who benefits. |
NVIDIA still owns the merchant GPU market. But every hyperscaler now has an internal chip program, because paying NVIDIA 70% gross margins forever isn't a viable long-term strategy. |
Amazon has Trainium and Inferentia. Google has TPU v7. Microsoft has Maia. Meta has MTIA. All of those custom accelerators pull in Marvell IP. |
Interconnect is where it matters most to you. Marvell is guiding for above 70% growth in interconnect for FY27, and that's the gear that lets chips talk to each other at full speed inside a data center rack. It's the choke point in every AI cluster being built today. |
Above 70% growth on a $2 billion revenue segment is a big number. |
Catalysts: Design wins take 18 to 24 months to translate into revenue. |
The wins Marvell announced in 2024 and 2025 are only now starting to hit the P&L, which means the revenue ramp you'll see in FY27 and FY28 is already largely locked in via signed customer commitments. |
Thursday's print is the near-term catalyst. The real edge is holding through the next four quarters as those custom silicon revenues compound. |
|
|
Bear Case |
You need to know what could break this. Three things. |
First, hyperscaler capex risk. If any of the Big 4 cut their AI capex guide even 10%, semis get hit across the board. Marvell has higher beta than most peers, so if you hold it, expect any sector pullback to hit you harder. |
Second, the earnings bar is high. The stock has already run 12% into the print, so an in-line quarter with no raise to interconnect guidance is likely to get sold. |
If management does not push FY27 interconnect growth above 80%, a retest of the $210 level it traded at a month ago is well within range. |
Third, competition. Broadcom is the other big custom silicon designer, and it's winning some of the same sockets. If a big Google or Meta contract flips to Broadcom in the next 12 months, Marvell's revenue ramp gets slower than your current model assumes. |
Also worth naming: a beta of 2.25 means this stock swings hard on any macro wobble. |
NVIDIA reports Wednesday after the close, and Fed Chair Warsh gives his first Jackson Hole keynote on Friday. Either one can move MRVL 5% before its own earnings land Thursday night. |
Size your position accordingly. This isn't a fire-and-forget name. |
|
|
Quick Checklist |
✅ Thesis intact heading into Monday's open
✅ Volume confirms move above key levels
